Today Chris and I met with a room full of people. We met with the school psychologist, the occupational therapist, the physical therapist, and the principle. And I say room full because it was a small room and with all these people plus us and the kids... the room was full!
Anyways, we were there just about an hour. The conclusion is this:
Nathan will no longer receive OT, Occupational Therapy, as he has mastered the skills he set out to achieve in OT. He can color using more than one color and he no longer just scribbles. He can use scissors without risking a finger. His grasp has vastly improved.
Nathan will continue to receive PT to work on balance, endurance, and overall strength. He will also try and learn to kick a rolling ball as his timing is still too off to appropriately do this.
Nathan was receiving social skills classes one a month and this will get more intense and he will now receive these skill classes with the psychologist once every cycle which is once every six days. It has been noted that he is still struggling to interact, react, and behave appropriately with his peers.
Nathan will go to third grade for reading at what they call a higher tier. He was at a low tier in third grade and will just go to a higher tier which is harder instead of going to fourth grade.
They will continue to challenge him with extra work in first grade rather than move him forward a grade to 2nd. This is being done because he is struggling so much socially.
Overall we are satisfied with what has been laid out in the 504.
I know this post has little flair it is more of a quick update for those interested!

Battle of the Button
What’s New?
Where do I even start?
Nathan’s testing through the school is now complete. He qualified for both Physical Therapy (PT) and Occupational Therapy (OT). Strangely enough the psychologist said that even though she has no doubt that Nathan does have Aspergers she can not diagnose him with Aspergers.
The reason? Apparently since she is a school psychologist and Nathan’s Aspergers DOES NOT interfere with his ability to learn new information she can not give him the diagnosis and he is not eligible for special education. This also means they do not have to give his information to Nathan’s poor teacher.
So our next step is??? MORE TESTING! We are going through Creative Services. Here is a link but it doesn’t give much information.
http://www.creativehs.org/
Basically they will be able to give him a medical diagnosis of Aspergers that will be attached to him for the rest of his life. Not sure how I feel about that. But in doing this he will be given more opportunities. They can continue to offer him social skills groups, coping support, and even support for Chris and I to know how to deal with some of his oddities or frustrations.
This will take months to complete.
Currently, Nathan did well with his Occupational Therapy today. It’s very funny to watch him interact with his therapist. At one point, while cutting out pieces to make a leprechaun, he asked his OT why she cut out the leprechaun’s arms and not him. She responded, “The arms were hard to cut out so I went ahead and did it.”
Nathan asked, “Well, how hard was it? Super hard?”
Her response was, “Let’s just say there probably wouldn’t have been much of an arm left if I hadn’t done it.”
I laughed. Nathan is getting better with scissors but he does still hack things to pieces most of the time.
This weekend was…..interesting…
Nathan is supposed to be learning to button things. It’s a real struggle for him since his fingers just don’t have the dexterity they need. But he is supposed to be learning and practicing. So Sunday morning we asked him to do ONE button and we would do the rest.
This turned into an absolute battle royal. Complete with tears, Nathan shrieking and running around making his odd noises, and a twenty battle of the button. In the end we got him to do the one button but let me tell you, a five year old freaking out over doing one button was just crazy.
Chris asked him why it upset him so much to do the button and Nathan yelled, “Because it’s too hard!”
Sadly, that is how Nathan approaches any challenge. He gets agitated and gives up very easily and complains that it’s too hard. The more agitated he gets the more things escalate with him.
We were also an hour late for church because we forgot to change our clocks!
The rest of our week is packed full! Today was Super Stars and OT. Tomorrow Ladies’ Meeting and Nana and Rose coming for lunch. Wednesday a play date. Thursday he has social group. Friday he has Theraplay. Tired yet?

Coming Up
Tomorrow Nathan has his social group and he won't know it but a phycologist from the school is going to be observing him tomorrow. He has to be reassessed by someone from the school before he can start Kindergarten. I mentioned again about him possibly attending 1st grade classes for reading and such but I can sense the hesitancy in her voice. We will see!
Friday he has Theraplay which he is NOT looking forward to. He doesn't like going because it's "hard." Poor guy.
Tuesday the same phycologist from the school will be re-evaluating him but this time I won't be sitting with Nathan. Not sure how I feel about that.
Nathan's new obsessions are Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King. He has also started to make noises while eating....over and over and over...ugh. We are in the midst of teaching him to use words instead of shrieking..about everything! The other day at a play date a boy stepped on his foot but instead of moving his foot or telling the boy that he was stepping on his foot he stood there and shrieked. Typical for him.
Emma needs her time in the spotlight too right? She had her hair done while my mom was here. She loves getting her hair washed and done and asked to go back to do it again. She is definitely a princess. Chris asked her tonight if she knew about Rosa Parks and Emma smiled and said, "Yes, Nathan told me." HA HA! I am sure he did.
And me? I am feeling so much better physically. I have more energy now and today I cleared out the kid's room. 3 bags of trash and 2 bags for donations. BIG BAGS! Crazy. Tonight I am pretty worn out. Someone is bringing us dinner tomorrow which is great. I miss my parents and the kids do too. I am so grateful for them flying up here the day after we heard.
Tomorrow will be two weeks since we found out our baby was gone. It will be my first time going back to Nathan's social group where two weeks ago I tearfully pulled him out to rush to the doctors. Nathan keeps writing "No Magic U" on his calendar. I asked him what it meant and he said it's "because you don't have the baby in your belly anymore." It doesn't seem to make much sense but I guess in some way it is his way of dealing with it.
